Grandma taught you. Maybe your mom did too. Really, everyone did it—even Julia Childs. Now I’m telling you to stop.

The practice can leave unseen bacteria and germs all over your kitchen, plus may increase your risk of food-borne illness. And the solution runs contrary to everything you’ve been taught.

What is this dangerous, controversial practice? Washing chicken.

It makes perfect sense to wash chicken before you cook it. I mean, who knows where it’s been? But research shows the process may actually spread germs, not kill them.

A better idea is simply unwrapping chicken and putting right on the grill or in the oven, making sure the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. That kills any and all bacteria.

So even though you’ve done it for years, don’t be too chicken, to stop the bird bath.
