Teen paddling canoe entire length of Mississippi River this summer!

I remember what I did the summer after I graduated…and it was NOTHING like what James Welbourn is doing.  He’s canoeing by himself from the beginning of the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico!

Check out his story….it’s amazing!

Who are you looking forward to talking to in Heaven?

It’s Garrett from Shine Afternoons and sometimes I daydream about being in heaven and being able to talk with my step-dad and my grandparents who are all with Jesus. Oh–David, Gideon and Rich Mullins too. Who are you looking forward to talking to in heaven?

What’s on your bucket list?

My son Jesse recently crossed something off his bucket list –Climbing Mt. Fuji in Japan. I’m so proud of him! He reminded me that I need to review mine and start working on it more. What’s on your bucket list?

What verse do you go to for encouragement?

A lot has been happening already this week here in the U.S. between the flooding in Colorado and yesterday’s tragedy at the Navy Shipyard in Washington D.C.—and it’s only Tuesday! When things seem to be going crazy around you…what bible verse do you cling too? For me I usually go to Jeremiah 29:11! What’s yours?

“Sweet Lorraine”

Have your heard about Fred and the sweet song he wrote for his wife of 73 years? Fred is 96-years old and his “Sweet Lorraine” went home to Jesus earlier this summer, and shortly afterwards he wrote these lyrics and entered a songwriting contest. It’s an incredible love story, and one that’s encouraged me to one day write a song for my beautiful bride too. Thanks Fred for the inspiration! Oh, and you might want to grab a few tissues!

What was your first summer job?

Hey it’s Garrett from Shine Afternoons…and many teens in Chicagoland are experiencing their first summer job right now. Mine was picking rock for area farmers for 10-12 hours a day. What was your first summer job?

“Walk-It-Out-Wednesday”-Your Quiet Time

Hey it’s Garrett from Shine Afternoons and today is a “Walk-It-Out-Wednesday.” I don’t know if you heard, but  scientists where I graduated high school from (that’s Minnesota by the way) have created the “world’s quietest room.” It’s a high-tech, acoustic chamber in which you can hear your own heartbeat and not one person has lasted longer than 45 minutes. So it got me thinking about my quiet time with God, and being quiet and “hearing” His voice? Do find it hard to have a “quiet” time? How are you “walking out” your quiet time?
